THEATRE TERMS AND WHAT THEY MEAN!

In is down, down is front
out is up, up is back
off is out, on is in.
And of course,
right is left, left is right.
A drop shouldn't and a
block and fall does neither.
A prop doesn't and
a cove has no water.
Tripping is OK.
A running crew rarely gets anywhere.
A purchase line will buy you nothing.
A trap will not catch anything.
A gridiron has nothing to do with football.
Strike is work (in fact, lots of work),
and a green room, thank goodness, usually isn't.
Now that you're fully versed in theatrical terms,

Break a leg .. but not really!

Want to prove to Jackson that you can sing?  The young people in the picture did.

Center Stage Jackson – Jackson’s community theatre group - is hosting the Fourth Annual Youth Singing Competition for young people up through 12 grade on Friday, January 20, 2012.  Contestants will be divided into two age groups: twelve and under, and thirteen through senior in high school. Come out to see the show and support our young people!  Admission fee for spectators is $5 with no additional charge for entrants.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the competition begins at 7:30 p.m. The purpose of this competition is to have a great time chasing away the winter doldrums while giving students the opportunity to show off their vocal talent.

No More Jackson Citizen Patriot Reviews of ANY Shows

Did you miss the newspaper reviews yet? Did you even realize that the Jackson Citizen Patriot stopped reviewing productions this past year? That means the Purple Rose, the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, and Center Stage Jackson productions.

A lot of audience members will attend without feeling the need for a review. We just ask friends what they thought or what they have heard.

In the meantime, there have been a couple of brief discussions in the theatre community about creative ways that gap might be filled. If you have ideas, we would love to know.

Here is what one theatre is doing, which sounds very interesting even though out of our league. Click HERE to read more.

Remember Dorne Lefere?

Dorne rehearsing for The Producers

I was reading Barnstorms, the newsletter of The Farmington Players, when I came across a name I recognized. Dorne Lefere. He is listed as playing Dickens in their upcoming production of A Christmas Carol. Earlier this year he starred as Max Bialock in The Producers.

Share your memories here if you worked with Dorne back in the day.

LEADING LADIES Open This Weekend

Jackson Community College presents . . .

'Cinderella Waltz' gives grown-ups
a new take on classic fairy tale
JCC students will present a different kind of fairy tale, "Cinderella Waltz" by Don Nigro, the last two weekends of October.

"Cinderella Waltz" is a fairy tale for grown-ups, with humor and a different kind of ending, said director Sandy DiCesare, coordinator of educational theatre at the College. It tells the story of Rosey Snow, who is trapped in a fairy tale world that is by turns funny and a little frightening. With her are stepsisters Goneril and Regan, her demented stepmother, her lecherous father, a bewildered Prince, a fairy godmother who sings salty old sailor songs, a troll and a possibly homicidal village idiot. It is meant for mature audiences, similar to a PG-13 rating.
"Cinderella Waltz" will be presented at 8 p.m. Oct. 20, 21, 22, 28 and 29, and 3 p.m. Oct. 23 and 30 in the Ruth Day Theater, Potter Center. Special preview show Oct. 20, all tickets $2. Tickets for all other performances are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students.

Encore Musical Theatre Presents . . .THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

If you haven't been to the Encore Theatre in Dexter, now is the time to go. Adam Guettal's LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is an exquisite jewel. It won the Tony Award a few years back and deservedly so. This production matches the original in style and vocal talent, an amazing feat for a charming little theatre in a small community. Go see it. You won't be sorry.

MSF Still Looking for Volunteers - See Theatre for FREE

Last week, during a Michigan Shakespeare Festival production of "The Winter's Tale" we experienced a complete blackout at the Jackson Community College Potter Center. Sunday, August 7, 2:00 p.m. - The Winter's Tale - 3 volunteers

If you have an 1-2 hours you can lend us until the curtain rises before each performance it would be a tremendous help.

Encore Musical Theatre Presents . . .Encore on the Edge Series

Mark your calendar!  The Encore will be continuing its Encore on the Edge series with a show that might be new to our audience, but has quickly developed a huge following in many theatre circles, and you won't want to miss it!

The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show's unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman (played by Thalia Schramm), telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man (played by Steve DeBruyne), tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

Composer of The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown, won Drama Desk Awards for the music and the lyrics after the Off-Broadway premiere in 2002. The show has since been produced at almost every major regional theater in the US, and has been seen in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Spain.

The Encore's production of The Last Five Years will run for 8 performances only, May 26 through June 5. Tickets are on sale now by visiting our website at http://theencoretheatre.org or by calling our box office at (734) 268-6200.

BON TON ROOM CLOSED - April 30, 2011

Bon Ton Room, Jackson, Michigan
Last night was the farewell celebration of the closing of Matt Davis's Bon Ton Room. Full of comedy improv, solo performers, and moments from the six shows presented over the last few years, it had the audience on their feet by the end of the evening. There were many tears and the realization that this venue, which many performers in Jackson felt was their home, would no longer exist.

The closing of the BTR will impact CSJ in a number of ways. The Youth Singing Competition has been held there since its inception. Three years of Miscast cabarets were presented there. With that space in mind, the Readings from the Second Stage series was born several years ago. Even our Annual Meeting and Awards Night has been held at the BTR.

Watch our webpage, calendar, sign up for our e-newsletter, or follow this blog for details on where we will be holding events in the future. Or if you have suggestions for locations, please e-mail us with your ideas at info@centerstagejackson.org.

And finallly, a space like the BTR is only special because of the people who made it welcoming, inspiring, and a safe place to learn and grow. Matt Davis created the environment and gathered talented people around him who believed in his vision. Matt, for everything you contributed to Jackson's performing community, for all the opportunitites you created, for everything you shared with us, THANK YOU doesn't say enough. WITH LOVE.

Be Part of LIGHT, an Internet Series

Tommy Kraft is a student at Albion College who's interested in directing film. He has several projects that he has written and are in the process of being produced. Among those projects is "Light", a twenty episode web series that will be shot over the course of Summer 2011. It's an action/drama that follows two friends who get caught in the middle of a terrorist plot to find an ancient artifact.

"Light" is the first of it's kind on the internet. No one has yet to create content of this type and especially in a fashion that allows for weekly release. Each episode will be approximately 6-8 minutes (with the exception of the last episode which will be closer to 25 minutes).

Although participation is on a volunteer basis, those involved will get screen credit. This could be a great opportunity if you are looking for a good portfolio piece or just for a chance to do some acting. If there are any questions please feel free to email him at tommy@projectnresource.com

Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater is Getting a Makeover

Barton S. Tibbits spent his fortune to give the town of Coldwater a 'grand theatre'. There is a wonderful history on their very helpful and informative website.

Tibbits is known for its professional summer stock and children's theatre productions, as well as serving as a concert hall and community theatre venue in the winter season.

Now the historic building, which has seen many changes over the years, is working to restore the original facade. Check out this article on Encore Michigan that details the work done so far. And, if you haven't been to Tibbits, add it to your list of 'must see' places.

The PRTC mission is to produce new American plays and create opportunities for Midwest theatre professionals." To read the complete article, got to Playbill HERE.

The play "charts one woman's journey with her family through the challenges and heartbreak of infertility to the promise of motherhood."  (Some Couples May... contains strong language and sexual situations.)

How Did I Miss This?

Apparently there is a fairly new theatre in Kalamazoo. They are now in their THIRD season. How did I miss this?

"The Farmers Alley Theatre is a professional ensemble based non-profit performance company dedicated to production popular and new work in the Downtown Kalamazoo area in a unique and intimate setting."

The reason this new performance venue came to my attention was the announcement I saw in Playbill for an upcoming production of A Catered Affair directed Joe Aiello with Scott Burkell and Barbara Marineau. If you were a fan of the Barn Theatre in Augusta these names should be familiar to you. (The Barn went dark last season after being in business for over 60 years. Their website says there will be a 2011 Season. I hope that's true.)

You can read the article from the Jackson Citizen Patriot by clicking HERE.
